A realistic dissertation timeline, from month one to submission
Most dissertations fail on time management, not ability. This is a six-month plan used by our writers, with the checkpoints supervisors expect and the delays that catch people out.
Six months is the standard runway for a UK undergraduate or Master's dissertation. If you have less, compress the reading phases first and protect the writing phases — the analysis and writing stages are where time disappears.
The month-by-month plan
| Month | Focus | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Scoping and proposal | Research question, aims, short proposal, initial reading list |
| 2 | Search strategy and literature | Documented search, screened sources, reading notes |
| 3 | Literature review draft | First full draft of the review with a gap statement |
| 4 | Methodology and data collection | Method chapter draft, ethics signed off, data collected |
| 5 | Analysis | Results chapter or thematic findings, charts or tables |
| 6 | Discussion, conclusion, polish | Full draft, supervisor feedback, final proofread, submission |
The checkpoints that matter
- Question locked by end of month 1. Every week the question moves, a week of reading is wasted.
- Ethics submitted early. Approval can take weeks — it is the most common single cause of missed deadlines.
- Supervisor sees a chapter by month 3. Students who submit nothing until month 5 lose the chance to correct course.
- Analysis data ready by month 4. If data collection slips, analysis and discussion slip with it.
- Full draft one month before submission. That leaves time for feedback, revisions and formatting.
Where time actually goes
Students consistently underestimate two things: time spent formatting and referencing at the end, and time lost waiting for supervisor feedback. Book a proofreading or formatting slot early, and never rely on feedback arriving the week it is due.
If you are behind schedule already, work backwards from the deadline, protect the writing weeks, and get chapter-level help rather than trying to rescue everything at once. Share your deadline with us and we will tell you honestly what is achievable.
